Non-Profit Management Certificates

MPA
The Master of Public Affairs Department of Political Science

The nonprofit certificate is designed to serve employees and managers to prepare them for the challenging work in the nonprofit sector. The certificate provides training in nonprofit management skills within the broader context of public service knowledge. Courses are offered in the evenings and on Saturdays, and students may complete the program at their own pace. The program is appropriate for those with a Master's degree in another field as well as those holding a bachelor's degree.

Features of the new certificate program

  • 15 credit hours of course work that can be completed within a year's time or longer
  • classes offered at the Triad Center and on campus
  • evening and Saturday courses
  • excellent faculty, many with experience in the nonprofit sector
  • small classes (15-25 students)
  • a mix of three-credit and one-credit courses, with some required and some elective
  • coverage of the major issues in nonprofit management
  • interesting and rigorous practical assignments
  • research opportunities in subjects you need to know more about
  • offered by the Master of Public Affairs program

  3. specific knowledge and skills needed in nonprofit management.

We are currently extending our deadlines to allow more participants to submit materials. Please contact the department for details!

  • an application form (see the Graduate School website: www.uncg.edu/grs
  • a transcript (bachelor's and/or master's degree) from a regionally accredited college or university
  • a personal statement about your career and educational goals (see form below)
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a resume

No test is required.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of nonprofit studies (and since there is no undergraduate degree), specific majors or course work are not required for admission.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE MPA PROGRAM :
This program allows students without an MPA degree who enroll in the certificate program to apply to the MPA program, and receive 12 hours of credit toward the degree. However, satisfactory completion of the certificate program does not guarantee admission to the MPA program. All other admission criteria, including transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation and a supplemental application would have to be completed by the applicant and reviewed by the faculty. Admitted students would have to complete the MPA degree within five years from the beginning of the certificate enrollment to the completion of the degree.
